Albanyville was founded in 1802 by Quinton
Albany who settled in the area after moving from Virginia. The original
town name was Spring Lake because the original settlement was around a lake
several miles from the river. Quinton married a mail order bride in 1810
and at least one of their descendents has lived in the community ever
since. After Quinton's death in 1827 from pneumonia, the town's name was
changed to Albanyville in his memory. The increased availability of
shipping caused by the close proximity of Blue River lead to nearly exponential
growth towards the river after the civil war. Much of this can be traced
to legendary mayor Grayson Baily. During his tenure, the city bypassed the
neighboring town of Davenport as a major shipping area. The founding of
Callison Publications as well as numerous other locally based industries have
made Albanyville one of the major mid-sized cities in the state. Since the
turn of this century, the city has continued to grow with future growth
expected. It is now a popular destination for new businesses and residents
due to it's excellent economy, despite the stock market events of recent years,
and a relatively low crime rate.
